DUROTHERM®
A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
1947
A tandem team – Jacques Kuhn joins the company
At long last, Henri Kuhn – who through necessity had taken on the company at an extremely early age – was able to share the responsibility with his brother. Jacques Kuhn, now aged 28, returned from the USA as a fully qualified mechanical engineer and took over as technical manager. Henri Kuhn remained responsible for sales, marketing and administration, while Jacques Kuhn focussed on product development and manufacture.
For 22 years, the brothers successfully headed the company as a tandem team and were able to secure a considerable share of the Swiss cookware market. The company’s workforce grew to more than 130 employees.
1969
Alone again - Henri Kuhn dies unexpectedly
On 18 October 1969, Henri Kuhn died suddenly and unexpectedly, just like his father, at 55 years of age. His brother Jacques now bore sole responsibility for the company. The clear division of tasks had worked extremely well for many years, but now the downside of this approach became evident. Alongside his own tasks in product development and production, Jacques suddenly found himself responsible for keeping up his brother’s work in sales, marketing and administration.
Jacques Kuhn and his ideas for new products
- Jacques Kuhn remained a bachelor up to the age of 88.
- His love of pre-dinner aperitifs with friends inspired him to invent cookware that would keep meals hot for as long as possible, while his distaste for washing up called for cookware that was easy to clean (e.g., no gap between the handle and the side).
- Jacques Kuhn first toyed with the idea of developing thermal cookware at the end of the 1950s. Single items were fabricated, but the idea as a whole proved impossible because there was no way to spot weld the interior and exterior shells. Jacques had hoped to create a vacuum in the insulating cavity (today, this is filled with air).
1970
Form follows function the “from the hob to the table” idea
Kuhn Rikon correctly identified customer demand and began to develop cookware that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal. A pan that could be used not only to cook the food, but also to serve it. Verbatim, the original advertising brochure dating from this period claimed:
«…Cooking, frying and serving with the same cookware makes life easier for the modern housewife…»
TAVOLA – cooking and serving
The TAVOLA range represented yet another milestone in the development of modern cookware. At last, a solution was found for cooking and serving food in the same cookware. Thanks to new designs and colours, pans were made presentable as appealing tableware.
Gender roles have changed over the years, but men and women alike are still equally gratified to find practical solutions for everyday challenges. The «Tavola» theme was later developed further and resulted in the DUROTHERM® and HOTPAN® ranges. Based on the same principle, these also make life easier in the kitchen.
Over the decades, the red lids that were first used for DUROMATIC® pans have gained a high recognition factor and are closely associated with Kuhn Rikon’s quality products.
1975
The first double-walled DUROTHERM® pan is launched
Kuhn Rikon patents and launches DUROTHERM®, the world’s first double-walled cookware with no fewer than three uses – cooking, serving and keeping foods warm.
The product received gold medals at the Inventor’s Fairs in Geneva (1978) and Vienna (1979). To this day, Kuhn Rikon is the only company in the world to have mastered the complex art of producing double-walled cookware.
1985
MULITHERM Special for induction hobs
The MULTITHERM collection joins the range of double-walled cookware as the first double-walled pan suitable for use on induction hobs.
1994
Electronically controlled DUROTHERM® timax pressure cooker
The electronically controlled DUROTHERM timax pressure cooker heralded the dawn of a new era of smart, networked domestic appliances.
2006
The HOTPAN® was the first product to emerge from the newly founded in-house design department.
After just one year of development work, the design department launched its first product, the HOTPAN®. The product, which is available in five different sizes and colours, won various international design awards following its global launch.
In addition to its strong visual appeal, this SWISS MADE cookware is exceptionally functional and practical. For example, it uses up to 60% less electricity or gas as well as keeping food warm for up to two hours.

DUROTHERM® PRO IS LAUNCHED
2022
THE DUROTHERM® BECOMES PRO
Luxury with style: the synonym for DUROTHERM® in 2022. The induction-compatible Superthermic sandwich base, the magnetic heat-retaining base, the flame protection and the ergonomic handles have been retained so as not to abandon the tried and tested. In addition to a new production process using 2-layer material, the focus was therefore mainly on the design. After all, the DUROTHERM® can and should be on every finely laid table. This is where the DUROTHERM® PRO can make the most of its aesthetics and optimum serving properties.

They also do not get hot and therefore ensure comfortable and safe cooking enjoyment. Thanks to its elegant design and high-quality materials, this ‘pan’ is a must for any elegantly laid table.
